When asked who my favorite dog is, without a doubt, it’s a little bitch called “Bunny”. Her real name is Indian Creek Energizer. Bunny is very old now and the love of our lives. She was never meant to be a show dog, although her mother was a Champion and her father a champion producer. In fact, Bunny was sold as a pet and they never picked her up. Admittedly, Bunny is everything breeders try to “weed out” of a breeding program. All her faults come to us in one little precious package. The almost prick ears, round eyes, small size, but that little body contains the biggest heart of anything that has ever lived at Indian Creek.
She was so gutsy in her litter of seven and such entertainment! My husband remarked, “She won’t eat too much”. Thus she moved into our house and bed. She travels with us and we don’t know how we will survive when she is gone. Being bossy and intimidating, Bunny has trained every puppy in the house over the years. She continues to hold her “alpha bitch” status despite her age. She has been by my side through many difficult times and is loyal to a fault. Now we see her little white muzzle and missing front teeth and our hearts break. Our house will be desolate when she is no longer by our side.
So, if there is a favorite dog I would want displayed on my wall or elsewhere that means the most to our family, it’s our pet Bunny! The picture in the truck shows her true _expression and she is smiling. The one on the couch shows her true color, and the one standing reflects just how unsound she is!
The bottom line for any dog owner and breeder should be about loving your dog despite the imperfections. So, here she is, the dog that owns our hearts!
Bunny is 13 years old now, a little slower. She comes for her Rimadyl every morning, still pushes the other dogs around, but sleeps like only old dogs can now. She has spurts of play, but they are fewer She dotes on me and follows me everywhere and sits by my computer when I type. She rides in the car at each opportunity and sits and whines for attention. When given a plate to lick, she carries it to her dog bed and dares anyone other dog to infringe on her right to have it all by herself. We see a day coming we would like to put off much longer, but as long as she gets around and enjoys lying in the sunshine and sitting with me on the sun porch, she remains with us. What a void someday we shall see.
